Statistics released July 2007 for the year 2004 shows reported
abortions nationally at 100, 763.1
Locally, in 2003, teen pregnancies (Ages 15-19) were 124. Of
these pregnancies, 44% ended in a therapeutic abortion.2
Rate of Therapeutic Abortions per 100 Pregnancies
Lambton County (1999-2003)
Age 15-19 47.9%
Age 35-39 13.0%
Age 20-24 28.5%
Age 40-44 27.1%
Age 25-29 12.4%
Age 45-49 37.5% 3
Age 30-34 - 3.2%
In 2003, 19% of all pregnancies in Lambton ended in an
Abortion.4
Therapeutic abortions performed in hospitals and registered clinics
are reported to the province, however, the total number of
abortions is underestimated, as medically induced abortions, those
induced by methotrexate or RU486 and those abortions
occurring out of province are not captured.4
As far as we know, no local doctors are performing abortions at
our hospital. An out-of-town doctor comes in.

Canada Devoid of any Abortion Law
Prior to 1969, abortion was lawful in Canada if done in good
faith to preserve the life of the mother.
1969 The criminal code is amended to decriminalize abortions
done by a doctor in a hospital after approval for the procedure has been
given. In the first year of the change there were 11, 152 abortions
performed in Canada.
1988 January 28 The Supreme Court of Canada strikes down
Section 251 of the Criminal Code, the section governing abortion,
declaring it unconstitutional, leaving Canada without an abortion law.
1989 The Mulroney Progressive Conservative government
introduced Bill C-43 in an effort to legislate abortion after the
Supreme Court ruling of 1988 effectively left Canada without any laws
regulating abortion.
1990 Bill C-43 offered no real protection to the unborn since
it would have made abortion a right. Bill C-43 was passed by the House
of Commons in May 1990 by a slim margin of 9 votes.
1991 Supreme Court of Canada rules that a child in the process
of being born is not a person; unborn babies do not have any legal
rights unless they are born alive.
1991 Bill C-43 is defeated in the Canadian Senate in January
when the voting on the measure resulted in a 43-43 vote. Since that time
there have been no other government attempts to legislate on abortion.
Private members bills on the topic have also been foiled at every turn.
